Airfix's 1/48th scale Hawker Hurricane Mk I was released in 2015 and is a brand new mould. It comes in soft light gray plastic, with a nice amount and quality of internal and external detail. Its construction is pretty straightforward, and is easy to built, even by a novice. We chose to use three sets of Eduard for better results, no 49726 with details for the cockpit and the exterior, Brassin no 648230 which provides two exhausts with far better quality than the plastic ones, and the masks set no EX468.

Construction started from the cockpit, with the instruments' panel and seat being replaced with photoetched parts from Eduard's set, which also gives nice seatbelts. The interior was painted with a combination of Humbrol 78 interior green for the sidewalls and aluminum for the tubes, the seat and the floor. Airfix gives us the option to open the gun bays with adequate internal detail (eight .303 gun breeches are included for inside the wings) but we decided to keep them closed. The wing assembly is easy, without any problems, with the exception of the landing light crystals. We decided to sand them flat to the wing and polish them with micromesh and future floor polish. The wing and fuselage assembly was also without any problems. Parts needing attention are the trailing edges of the wings. They are thick and need to be thinned for realism.

Painting started with the under surfaces being painted with Tamiya's XF-21 Sky. The upper surfaces were masked with rolls of Blu Tak/tape and painted with Gunze H72 Dark Earth and H73 Dark Green. All the colours were faded using the airbrush, and several thin layers of Future floor polish prepared the model for the decals. Although printed by Cartograph, these are matt, stiff and very difficult to adjust to the details of the surface even with a generous amount of Gunze Mr Mark Softer. Another layer of Future sealed the decals before the wash, with raw umber and dark gray combination. The exhaust stains were replicated with the airbrush using black colour mixed with brown and gray, while the stains of the guns were done with pastels. The final coats by airbrush were many thin layers of Winsor & Newton Galeria matt varnish. The thin antenna wire was added using Infini models black lycra rigging and the model was standing finished on our bench!
