The Sukhoi Su-33 (Russian: Сухой Су-33; NATO reporting name: Flanker-D) is an all-weather carrier-based twin-engine air superiority fighter, designed by Sukhoi and manufactured by Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Production Association, derived from the Su-27 and initially known as the Su-27K. Compared with the Su-27, the Su-33 has a strengthened undercarriage and structure, folding wings and stabilators, all for carrier operations. The Su-33 has canards and its wings are larger than the Su-27 for increased lift. The Su-33 has upgraded engines and a twin nose wheel, and is air refuelable.

The Su-27K entered service in the mid-1990s aboard the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. From December 1995 to March 1996, Admiral Kuznetsov set sail in the Mediterranean Sea, carrying two Su-25UTGs, nine Ka-27s, and 13 Su-27Ks. However, the aircraft officially entered service 31 August 1998 with the 279th Naval Fighter Regiment of the Northern Fleet based at Severomorsk-3, by which time it was officially designated the "Su-33".

Following the break-up of the Soviet Union and the subsequent downsizing of the Russian Navy, only 24 aircraft were produced. Attempted sales to China and India fell through. With plans to retire the Su-33 once they reach the end of their service life, the Russian Navy ordered the MiG-29K as a replacement in 2009. The Russian Navy currently operates 19 Su-33s.

On 15 November 2016, Sukhoi Su-33 fighter jets began conducting combat flights over Syria from Admiral Kuznetsov's flight deck in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

The Kinetic kit in 1/48 scale

Kinetic released in 2015 an all-new and long awaited 1/48th scale Sukhoi Su-33 Flanker-D (catalog No. K48062). The kit comprises 253 parts in grey plastic, 10 parts in clear and markings for 19 aircraft from 1st and 2nd Squadrons. It is a very impressive kit, which features state-of-the-art surface textures, a very high level of detail, plenty of useful options and poseable parts. Panel lines, vents, access hatches and more are all depicted in their crisp recessed detail.

So, except a Quickboost resin ejection seat used, this build is entirely OOB.

After the basic build was finished, I prepared the model for painting. I washed it with soap water to remove any grease from my hands and dust residues.

The first stage started by spraying Mig Ammo grey primer. Using primers we can detect any flaws on our models and prepare the surface for the paint.

For the painting of this model I used the Mig Ammo Air Set for the Su-33 (A.Mig-7208).The painting procedure started painting the lower surfaces of the model using a mix of Mig Ammo’s Compass Ghost Grey (203) and Light Grey (209). The various shades and highlights came from using the basic mixed color with some drops of matt white. I also sprayed a very diluted filter (ratio 95/5 thinners to color) of a blewish color to enhance the effect. The outcome is not very visible but it gives the right color tone seeing it from a close distance.

After that I began painting the upper surfaces and the 3 color cammo pattern. Painting was done using masks for the very tight cammo. At first I used the white color of the set to paint the radome and masked it to proceed to the basic painting. First color of the cammo is the dark grey blue of the air set (A.Mig-229). I made the postshading adding to the basic color a few drops of white.

For the second color I used a mix of A.Mig-210 Grey Blue and A.Mig-209 Light Grey colors because -according to photos- the real aircraft’s grey is slightly darker that the set’s grey.

Finally I sprayed the last color A.Mig-224 Skyline Blue. At the end of the painting stage, I realized that the dark grey blue areas near the cockpit were slightly unrealistic and for that reason I changed the pattern by spaying bigger and wider curves. I think now it looks just right!

After the paint job was finished I gave the whole model a coat of clear gloss varnish from Ammo range and started painting the large metallic areas that make Russian fighters so distinguished. After masking the relevant areas in both upper and lower surfaces, I sprayed the Mig Ammo/Alclad black base prime ALC-305 to create a good base for the metallics and I did the same for the engine exhaust parts.

Then I began painting the rear metallic and the gun area. The first color I used was Alclad’s/Ammo Dark aluminium (ALC 103) and then I played mixing various shades of Aluminium, Exhaust Manifold, Stainless Steel and Hot metal blue. At the end of the build I gave some different tones using Tamiya’s weathering powders.

Then I sprayed all the leading edges of the model using Dark Aluminium and Aluminium (ALC 103 & ALC 101) after studying photo’s of the real aircraft.

Then I prepared the engine fans. Kinetic’s kit gives a very detailed and refined photoetch part in this area. For painting those parts I used Alclad’s stainless steel and gunze’s metallic bronze and light green.

After placing decals to the whole model, weathering stage started using PLW Dark Sea Blue for the blewish upper surfaces...

...and PLW Deep Grey for grey color and the lower surfaces.

Give it 20-30 minutes to dry and then remove the excess with good quality paper towel and some thinners help if needed.

After the PLW cleaned up, I sprayed the model with the satin varnish from the Ammo range.

Prior to final assembly & finishing I sprayed the wheels with Mig Ammo rubber and tires black (033) and gunze’s light green.

Then I sprayed them with glossy varnish and finally gave them a wash using PLW Deep Brown.

This time I used super strong mini round disc magnets (photo above-right, cheap & easily found on ebay) for the missile - launchers connection, in order to avoid glue marks. It seems magnets give a more ‘’clear’’ result.

The Kinetic kit finally turns into a large and impressive model when finished! Well worth our effort...
