Τhe most widely cited four-wheeled vehicle of the German Army during the Second World War was undoubtedly the Kubelwagen. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche in 1938, was based on the simultaneous development of the chassis is also the famous "Beetle" and went into mass production in February 1940. Over 50,000 units were produced until 1945 and some of them immaculately kept and in Greece by club members preserve historical vehicles (SDIO).
Success Kubelwagen becomes even greater by the fact that in contrast to the U.S. counterpart, the Willys Jeep, was run only at 2 and rear wheels not at 4, motor positioned behind and yield only 22 horsepower (compared their 60IP of Willys). Alongside the German vehicle was more comfortable for four passengers, simpler to manufacture, easier to maintain, more resistant to hard use, faster, with storage space, better protection (doors) and very effective in every type of terrain. In essence the technological innovations of the driveline, the differential has been advanced and fully independent suspension on each wheel were those who did behave many times better than four-wheel drive on the battlefield. For example on steep uphills were safer because of its low center of gravity and rear-wheel drive was a conscious choice and flexibility offered even in sand, snow or mud.
