ACES HIGH Magazine, Issue No. 16, Normandy D-Day (AK Interactive – AK2933)

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, the sixteenth issue of “Aces High” magazine is dedicated to this memorable and victorious operation.

Inside you’ll find comprehensive articles on building models of five aircraft which participated in the Operation Overlord, in 1/48, 1/32 and 1/72 scales. Both the much-publicized types such as the Fw 190 A-8, Tempest Mk.V and P-38J Lightning are featured, along with a C-47 Skytrain and Hellcat Mk.I which are less commonly seen in publications devoted to this subject.

Chief Editor Daniel Zamarbide has compiled an attractive package of modelling builds:

The P-38J Lightning is first in 1/48 scale. Daniel used the well detailed, but a bit challenging (concerning fit problems) Hasegawa kit. The end result is fantastic, with spectacular and extra realistic weathering techniques (14 pages – 44 WIP photos!)

Fernando del Pino then tackles the C-47 Skytrain (Dakota) new tool Airfix kit in 1/72 scale. Also 14 pages full of WIP photos and easy to follow realistic painting & weathering techniques.

Ralph Riese is next with a maginificent Fw190A-8 in 1/32 scale (Hasegawa kit). Priller’s “Black 13” is chosen as a theme and the big scale allowed Ralph to demonstrate his excellent skills on this classic & detailed model. Riveting, extensive use of masking tape and simple but trusted & effective methods for worn out painted surfaces will guide you to a perfect result. Also 14 pages and many good quality close-up and big photos to help the modeler focus to the minutest detail.

The Hawker Tempest in 1/48 scale (Eduard) is the model chosen by Tomas de la Fuente and this is really interesting, because of this rather neglected modeling subject. Tomas put great effort into improving & detailing this kit to an admirable high level. If you like preshading and highlighting rivets -and other details- here you will find mamy useful tips - plus internal & external detail, like cockpit and machine guns (12 pages).

The last 14 pages of the magazine are devoted to the Hellcat Mk.1, or the british version of F6F-3. Oto Drobic worked heavily on the excellent Eduard 1/48 scale kit and the end result is truly outstanding and realistic. Oto used airbrush templates, among other interesting techniques, like extensive oil colors washes. Probably the best Hellcat in scale, sporting Royal Navy markings!

All in all, absorbing, fulfilling and rewarding reading, packed with a lot of D-Day modeling ideas to implement into your next projects. All the model photography and text are -as expected- very explanatory and informative.
